20Bet Casino Deposit Declined
Four things stop an Irish card at the 20Bet cashier, and only one of them is the casino's doing. Here is how to tell which one you have hit — and what actually fixes it.
The short answer
Your deposit is almost certainly being refused by your bank, not by 20Bet. Credit cards are illegal for gambling in Ireland, most Irish banks block merchant code 7995 by default, and 3-D Secure prompts expire in about two minutes. Switch to a debit card or turn gambling payments on in Revolut, keep the name identical to your account name, and deposit at least €10.
Why the payment was declined
The cashier gives you a generic "transaction unsuccessful" message and no reason, which is maddening but normal: the acquiring bank does not pass the decline code back to the merchant in a form the casino is allowed to show you. So you have to work it out from the outside in.
1. You used a credit card
Credit cards have been prohibited for gambling in Ireland since 5 February 2026 under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024. The ban covers credit facilities generally, including a wallet topped up from a credit card, so a credit card loaded into Apple Pay or Google Pay is refused for exactly the same reason. AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB and Revolut all decline these attempts at source.
Fix: Use a debit card. Check the card art — Irish debit cards say "Debit" near the scheme logo. If you are not sure, the card in your current account app is the debit one.
2. Your bank is blocking merchant code 7995
Every gambling transaction carries merchant category code 7995. Irish banks let you switch a block on this, and several apply it by default to new accounts, to under-25 accounts and to any account where a gambling block has ever been requested. The payment never reaches 20Bet; it dies at your issuer.
Fix: Revolut, AIB and Bank of Ireland all expose the block in their own apps; PTSB handles it through support. Note that switching a block off carries a cooling-off delay — Revolut's runs about 48 hours — so this is not something you can undo mid-session, which is the entire point of it. If you set that block yourself as a brake, please leave it on.
3. 3-D Secure timed out
The cashier hands you off to your bank for approval, your phone shows a push notification, and you have roughly two minutes to confirm it. Miss it — phone on silent, app needs a re-login, notification swallowed by Do Not Disturb — and the whole transaction is voided. It looks identical to a hard decline from the cashier's side.
Fix: Open your banking app before you start the deposit and leave it in the foreground. On iOS, allow notifications from the banking app. Then retry once.
4. The name does not match
20Bet only accepts payment instruments in the account holder's own name. A card in a partner's name, a business card, a prepaid card bought in a shop, or a wallet registered to a different email will be refused — sometimes at the moment of deposit, sometimes later, when a withdrawal is reviewed and the balance is frozen while it is sorted out.
Fix: Deposit only from an instrument in your own legal name, spelled exactly as on your account profile. If you have already used someone else's card, tell support before you try to withdraw, not after.
How it looks on your statement
A failed gambling deposit rarely disappears cleanly, and the descriptor is never the word "20Bet". Knowing what to look for saves a pointless call to the casino.
Pending authorisation
The amount is ring-fenced but not taken. It usually falls off in one to five working days without anyone doing anything. Your available balance is reduced in the meantime.
A processor name, not a casino name
Expect a payment-processor descriptor with a reference number rather than a brand. That is normal and is not evidence of anything going wrong.
Duplicate holds
Retrying four times can leave four holds. They release individually, so a €200 balance can look €80 lighter for a couple of days. This is the main reason not to spam the retry button.
The Irish banking rails, and why they behave differently
Ireland's retail banking market got a lot smaller in 2023 when Ulster Bank and KBC wound down their Irish operations. Most people moved to AIB, Bank of Ireland, PTSB or a digital account, and gambling payments behave differently on each.
| Provider | Gambling block default | How to change it | Deposit success in our tests |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revolut | Off, user-controlled | In-app toggle, ~48h cooling-off to remove | Consistent on debit |
| AIB | Off, user-controlled | In-app card controls | Consistent on debit |
| Bank of Ireland | Off, user-controlled | In-app card controls | Consistent on debit |
| PTSB | Off, user-controlled | Through customer support | Consistent on debit |
| An Post Money | No gambling block offered | — | Mixed |
| N26 | Varies by product | In-app card settings | Mixed |
| Any credit card | Hard block | Cannot be lifted | Always declined |
If your old card was an Ulster Bank or KBC one, it stopped working when those banks exited the Irish market — update the card saved in your 20Bet cashier rather than assuming the casino has blocked you.

Debit cards: the boring option that works
A debit card is still the default for most Irish players, and for depositing it is genuinely fine. Instant, no fee from 20Bet, and the money is in the balance before you have finished putting the card away. The catch is on the way back out: a card withdrawal is a refund against the original authorisation, which is why it takes one to three days rather than one to three hours.
Two details save the most grief. First, save the card in the cashier rather than typing it fresh each time — a mistyped expiry is the single most common self-inflicted decline. Second, if you have moved bank since you registered, delete the old card from the cashier. Withdrawals get routed back to the card you deposited with, and a closed card sends the money into a slow reversal process that support has to chase manually.
Works reliably
- Visa Debit from an Irish current account
- Mastercard Debit from an Irish current account
- Revolut card with gambling enabled
Will be declined
- Any credit card, including through Apple Pay or Google Pay
- Prepaid gift cards bought in a shop
- A card in anyone's name but yours
- Cards from banks that have left the Irish market
Wallets: slower to set up, much faster to be paid
If your card keeps failing and you would rather not phone your bank, an e-wallet sidesteps the whole problem. Setting up Skrill or Neteller takes about ten minutes including their own identity check, and once it is done both deposits and withdrawals stop being an event. Our fastest 20Bet payout of the whole test period was a Skrill withdrawal that landed in four hours on a Wednesday afternoon.
One thing to watch
Many casinos, 20Bet included, exclude wallet deposits from the welcome bonus. If the offer matters to you, make the first deposit by card and switch to the wallet afterwards.
Keep the names identical
The name on the wallet must match the name on the 20Bet account and on your ID. Nicknames, missing middle names and married-versus-maiden name mismatches all get flagged at withdrawal review.
Mistakes that turn a small problem into a big one
Retrying six times in a row
Stacks authorisation holds and can trip a fraud lock on your bank account. Change something, or wait, before retrying.
Opening a second account
Duplicate accounts get closed and any balance on them is usually forfeited under the terms. Fix the payment instead.
Borrowing a card
It may deposit successfully and still cost you the withdrawal later. Third-party payments are the single most common reason a balance gets frozen.
Depositing €5 to "test"
Below the €10 minimum it either fails outright or lands without triggering the welcome offer, which will not be applied retrospectively.
Lifting a gambling block you set on purpose
If past-you turned that block on as a brake, the honest answer is to leave it on. Our responsible gambling page covers deposit limits, time-outs and self-exclusion, and the free Irish helplines are listed there too.
Declined deposits: quick answers
Why does 20Bet keep declining my card?
In Ireland the four usual causes are a credit card (banned for gambling), your bank blocking merchant category code 7995, a 3-D Secure prompt that timed out in your banking app, or a name on the card that does not match the name on the account. The casino itself rejects far fewer deposits than the banks do.
Can I use a credit card to deposit at 20Bet from Ireland?
No. Credit cards have been prohibited for gambling payments in Ireland since 5 February 2026 under the Gambling Regulation Act 2024, and the ban extends to wallets topped up from a credit facility. Irish issuers decline the transaction at their end regardless. Use a debit card, Revolut, or an e-wallet instead.
Does a declined deposit still take money from my account?
A declined payment normally leaves a pending authorisation that drops off within one to five working days. If the amount is still showing after five working days, contact your bank with the date and amount rather than the casino, because the funds never reached the casino.
Why does Revolut work when my bank card does not?
Revolut treats gambling as a category you switch on or off yourself in the app. AIB and Bank of Ireland offer the same control in their apps and PTSB does it through support, so the difference is usually just which account has the block set. Removing a block is never instant: Revolut applies a cooling-off period of around 48 hours before it lifts.
How long should I wait before retrying a declined deposit?
Wait at least 15 minutes and change something — a different method, a slightly different amount, or the app rather than the browser. Hammering the same card three or four times in a row often triggers a fraud lock on your bank account, which is a much bigger problem to unwind.
Will a declined deposit affect my welcome bonus?
No, but a partly successful one might. If your first successful deposit lands below the EUR 10 minimum, the offer will not attach, and 20Bet will not retro-apply it to a later top-up. Fund at least EUR 10 in one go if you want the bonus.
